Misophonia is characterized by an intense emotional reaction to specific auditory triggers, such as the sounds of eating or breathing. These responses are often immediate and involuntary. Interestingly, there exists a physical reflex associated with misophonia that precedes these emotional reactions, manifesting as a physiological response that elicits strong feelings.
Tom Dozier's work with over 1,500 individuals suffering from misophonia indicates that more than 95% demonstrate a physical reflex as an integral component of their condition. Recognizing how an individual's body responds to trigger sounds is crucial for effective treatment. Therefore, each patient is assessed for their unique physical reflex.
The accompanying app offers a variety of trigger sounds and the functionality to record personalized sound triggers. It aims to help users diminish their responses by two primary methods:
- Volume Modulation: By reducing the volume to a barely audible level, users can minimize their awareness of subtle sounds. This often leads to a weaker or absent misophonic reflex. Users can gradually increase the volume until they first perceive the trigger while ensuring the trigger duration remains brief.
- Sound Duration Adjustment: Shortening the length of the trigger sound can further decrease its recognizability. For instance, a trigger sound lasting merely 0.2 seconds may not elicit a misophonic response, allowing users to hear the sound without triggering a reaction. Gradually extending the duration can help identify thresholds at which minor physical reflexes may occur.
Under these controlled conditions—low volume, shortened length, or both—many individuals report noticing subtle physical sensations or movements in their bodies, such as slight muscle tension in the shoulders.
The app also incorporates insights from Tom Dozier regarding strategies for managing and treating misophonia based on physical reflexes. Observed reflexes in patients can vary widely and may include muscle contractions in areas such as the face, neck, shoulders, and limbs. Other reported responses have included shortness of breath, involuntary head movements, and various sensations affecting areas such as the chest cavity and abdomen.
Moreover, the app features a sound file editor that enables users to trim recordings so that desired trigger sounds are prominently placed at the start. This functionality allows for more extensive recordings to be condensed into single effective triggers, although assistance may be necessary for editing tasks.
